Tarique Rahman Takes Office: Aiming to Reshape Bangladesh
A significant political shift has taken place in Bangladesh as Tarique Rahman has assumed office as the country’s new Prime Minister following a decisive victory in the recent general elections. This development marks the end of a two-decade hiatus for the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and signals a commitment to restoring stability after the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Rahman, who returned to Bangladesh after 17 years in self-imposed exile, aims to implement a comprehensive strategy to address pressing national issues.
In his inaugural address, Rahman emphasized the importance of law and order, vowing to eliminate the “mob culture” that has escalated since Hasina’s departure. Reports from the Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council highlight a troubling trend, with over 522 communal attacks documented in 2025 alone, including 116 murders targeting minority communities from June 2025 to January 2026. Rahman assured citizens that his government would uphold the rights of all faiths, stating, “Not party or political influence or force, but the rule of law will be the final word in governing the state.”
Addressing Economic Challenges
To stabilize the economy, which has faced challenges linked to corruption, Rahman has introduced a bold 180-day priority plan. This extended timeline for initial reforms, traditionally set at 100 days, is designed to facilitate deeper structural changes. The plan is focused on four critical areas: restoring public security, controlling the prices of essential goods, ensuring consistent energy supplies, and improving public transport, particularly the railway system.
Rahman also expressed the necessity of equipping the workforce for the digital age, promising initiatives to support youth development in intellectual and scientific fields. This approach aims to prepare the population for the impending era of artificial intelligence.
Reviving Diplomatic Relations
Another vital aspect of Rahman’s agenda is the restoration of diplomatic ties, especially with India. The newly appointed sports minister, Aminul Haque, is taking swift action to mend a dispute with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Bangladesh was replaced by Scotland in the 2026 T20 World Cup following tensions related to the IPL and the inclusion of pacer Mustafizur Rahman. Haque has already initiated discussions with Indian officials, including a meeting with the deputy high commissioner, aiming to foster amicable relations across various sectors.
The significance of Rahman’s leadership transition has been underscored by a congratulatory letter from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who invited him and his family to visit India. Modi described the two nations as “close neighbours” united by a shared history and expressed a desire to collaborate in areas such as trade, technology, and energy. The presence of Indian Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla at Rahman’s swearing-in ceremony further emphasized the importance of this relationship.
Foreign Minister Kalilur Rahman has articulated a new foreign policy framework termed “Bangladesh First,” which aims to build friendly relations with all nations, reflecting the vision set by the late President Ziaur Rahman. This shift in focus signals a commitment to regional cooperation and stability after a period of significant domestic unrest.
As the new administration embarks on this ambitious journey to reshape Bangladesh, the world will be watching closely to see how Rahman’s policies unfold over the coming months.
