Director Bikas Ranjan Mishra Critiques Support for Women-Led Films

Bikas Ranjan Mishra, the director of the upcoming film Bayaan, expressed concerns regarding the film industry’s inadequate support for female-led narratives. During the film’s premiere at the Red Lorry Film Festival 2026, he raised poignant questions about the apparent disconnect between women in powerful roles and their support for such stories. Mishra stated, “In our film industry, females are in powerful positions. Yet, I wonder ek certain female-led film se kya pareshaani hai?” He urged those in influential positions to consider why they do not champion these crucial narratives.

The film Bayaan features Huma Qureshi in the lead role. It tells the story of a rookie police officer who strives to build a case against a spiritual leader accused of sexual violence. The plot appears to draw inspiration from real-life events, presenting a challenging yet essential topic in today’s sociocultural climate. Mishra’s emphasis on the film’s significance underscores the need for increased representation of women’s experiences in cinema.

Amid these challenges, producer Shiladitya Bora acknowledged the risks associated with such a project. He remarked, “I have built my career like this. I am a person with a very high-risk appetite.” Bora’s confidence in tackling sensitive subjects reflects a growing trend among filmmakers to address pressing societal issues through their work.

As for the film’s distribution, Bora indicated that discussions are ongoing with a major platform regarding its release. In a statement quoted by Bollywood Hungama, he mentioned, “Currently, we are in talks with a major platform. That’s one route that we are figuring out, whether to do a direct-to-digital release or do a theatrical.” He further noted that Bayaan could be available to audiences within the next couple of months.

Bora expressed optimism about attracting interest from distributors worldwide, including those in North America. He stated, “We are in the final stages of putting together the release plan. We have got interest from major distributors from everywhere.” This eagerness for distribution highlights the film’s potential impact and the importance of its narrative in contemporary discussions surrounding women’s rights and societal justice.
