Australian Entrepreneur Uses AI to Develop Cancer Vaccine for Dog
In a remarkable application of technology, Australian entrepreneur Paul Conyngham has reportedly developed a customised cancer vaccine for his dog, Rosie, utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) and the chatbot ChatGPT. Conyngham’s journey began when traditional treatments failed to manage the growth of tumours associated with Rosie’s mast cell cancer, leaving the eight-year-old Staffy-Shar Pei cross with a limited prognosis.
Conyngham, who possesses 17 years of experience in machine learning and data analytics, leveraged AI tools to create a tailored treatment plan. He sequenced Rosie’s DNA from her tumours, transforming tissue samples into data. This process enabled him to identify genetic mutations contributing to her cancer. The AI chatbot ChatGPT played a critical role throughout the development, guiding Conyngham in formulating a solution.
A Collaborative Effort with Researchers
After identifying the specific mutations, Conyngham collaborated with researchers from the University of New South Wales to develop a custom messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccine. This innovative approach specifically targets the mutations found in Rosie’s tumours. The vaccine was administered to her in December 2025, marking a pivotal moment in her treatment.
Since receiving the vaccine, Rosie has shown significant improvement, with reports indicating a 50 percent reduction in her tumours. Conyngham shared a heartwarming moment when he observed Rosie, who had previously struggled with low energy, jump a fence to chase a rabbit at a local dog park. “I’m under no illusion that this is a cure, but I do believe this treatment has bought Rosie significantly more time and quality of life,” he stated.
Navigating Regulatory Challenges
The path to this breakthrough was not without obstacles. Conyngham faced regulatory challenges, including a three-month period required for obtaining ethics approval before proceeding with the treatment. His determination highlights the potential of AI in personalizing medical treatments, even in veterinary care.
This case illustrates a growing intersection between technology and healthcare, particularly in the realm of cancer treatment. By harnessing the power of AI, Conyngham not only sought to improve Rosie’s life but also opened up possibilities for future innovations in personalized medicine.
