RSS Leader Asserts India as Hindu Nation at Mumbai Event
Senior leader of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Sunil Deodhar, declared at an event in Mumbai that India has always been and will remain a Hindu nation. Speaking at the RSS Mumbai Vyakhyanmala event held in Andheri East on March 15, 2024, Deodhar emphasized the importance of accurately portraying Hindu epics and traditions to counter narratives he perceives as misleading.
During his address, Deodhar stated, “Bharat Hindu Rashtra tha, hai aur rahega,” which translates to “India was, is, and will remain a Hindu nation.” He expressed concern that educational content about Hindu traditions is often misrepresented, leading children to misunderstand their cultural heritage. According to Deodhar, certain narratives have been propagated by Christian missionaries and some Islamic clerics, aiming to provoke Hindu sentiments.
Deodhar referenced stories from Hindu epics to illustrate his point. He argued that figures like Harishchandra and Draupadi are often depicted inaccurately, suggesting that these representations create a distorted view of Hindu values. He explained that Harishchandra made profound sacrifices, and the circumstances surrounding Draupadi‘s plight in the dice game were misrepresented.
“People say Harishchandra sold Taramati, Draupadi was put on stake by her husbands, and Lord Ram sent Sita away from his home,” Deodhar commented. He clarified that decisions made by figures like Lord Ram were rooted in the context of their responsibilities, indicating that historical actions were often misinterpreted.
Challenging Misconceptions of Hindu Traditions
Deodhar also addressed societal practices that he claims have been wrongly attributed to Hindu traditions. He stated that customs such as women covering their heads and child marriage are not historically part of Hindu culture. “Watch the Ramayana and Mahabharata serials. Where did Sita, Kaikeyi, Mandodari, Kunti or Draupadi cover their head? It was never a part of our religion,” he asserted.
He further contended that women in ancient India had the right to education, arguing that restrictions on women’s freedoms emerged during the rule of Muslim leaders. Deodhar’s comments reflect a broader concern within certain factions of Indian society regarding the preservation of traditional values amidst changing cultural narratives.
Deodhar urged parents to educate themselves about these narratives so they can effectively communicate with their children. He expressed that many parents struggle to answer their children’s questions about Hindu epics, as they may not fully understand the historical context themselves.
The remarks made by Sunil Deodhar at the RSS event highlight a significant cultural dialogue in India regarding the interpretation of its history and religious narratives. The discussion continues to resonate within communities, reflecting ongoing tensions around identity and tradition in a rapidly changing society.
