In a recent interview, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado expressed her readiness to lead the country following the capture of former President Nicolas Maduro. This statement comes after U.S. President Donald Trump questioned Machado’s potential as a future leader of Venezuela, stating that she lacks support within the nation.

Machado, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, declared, “We are ready and willing to serve our people,” emphasizing her belief that she should be the next leader. In her remarks to CBS News, she stated, “The people of Venezuela have already chosen” their future government after Maduro’s recent downfall. This declaration follows Maduro’s arrest by U.S. military forces in Caracas, alongside his wife, Cilia Flores.

Opposition Leadership Amid Uncertainty

Machado, who previously won a primary election to run against Maduro in the 2024 presidential election, faces significant challenges. The Venezuelan government barred her from participating in the elections, leading to the nomination of Edmundo Gonzalez, a retired diplomat, as her replacement. Gonzalez has garnered backing from the U.S. and other nations, being recognized as the victor of the 2024 elections despite allegations of vote tampering by Maduro’s regime.

When asked if she should be Venezuela’s next leader, Machado affirmed, “Absolutely yes.” She highlighted that her coalition has already designated Gonzalez as the president-elect. Despite this leadership structure, uncertainty looms over whether Machado or Gonzalez can return to Venezuela and effectively lead. Currently, the country is under the control of Vice President Delcy Rodriguez, whom Machado criticized as lacking trustworthiness, given her close ties to Maduro’s administration.

Response to Trump’s Remarks

In light of Trump’s comments doubting her credibility, Machado acknowledged her gratitude for the U.S. president’s role in Maduro’s capture. Trump had remarked, “I think it would be very tough for her to be the leader,” suggesting Machado does not possess the necessary respect or support within the country.

Machado countered these assertions, stating, “A few weeks ago, people would have said it was impossible to reach this point.” She credited Trump’s leadership and courage for bringing Maduro to justice, which she believes is a vital step toward “restoring prosperity and rule of law and democracy” in Venezuela.

Since Maduro’s capture, Trump has indicated that the U.S. plans to exert influence over Venezuela’s future governance. Although he has not communicated directly with Rodriguez, he noted her cooperation. While Trump remains skeptical of Machado’s support among the Venezuelan populace, some officials, including Republican Representative Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida, express confidence in her viability as a leader. Diaz-Balart stated that Machado would “probably” win an election, recognizing her history of opposition to the Maduro regime.

As the situation in Venezuela continues to evolve, Machado’s determination to serve her country remains evident, even as the path forward remains fraught with uncertainty.
