Jaishankar Criticizes Western Hypocrisy on India’s Military Actions
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar strongly criticized Western nations for what he termed their hypocrisy regarding India’s military operations. His remarks came in response to unsolicited advice from these nations following India’s recent action, known as Operation Sindoor, executed after a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam that resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians.
During a press conference while on an official visit to Luxembourg, Jaishankar addressed the reactions from Western countries, which he argued often prioritize their interests in global conflicts. He emphasized that these nations consistently express concerns about tensions surrounding India’s military actions yet fail to acknowledge similar issues in their own regions.
Jaishankar stated, “Why don’t you look at your own region and ask yourself, what are the levels of violence there? How much risk have you taken? How much worry do the rest of us have about your actions?” This pointed critique underscores a broader frustration with what he perceives as a double standard in the way Western nations engage with international issues.
The Indian military launched Operation Sindoor on May 6-7, 2025, targeting nine terrorist camps in both Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The operation successfully eliminated more than 100 terrorists, marking a significant response to the violence faced by India.
Jaishankar also referenced the recent US military operation in Venezuela, led by former President Donald Trump, which resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. He pointed out that while Trump claimed US mediation contributed to a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, India has categorically rejected such assertions, underscoring its position on sovereignty and self-determination in international relations.
In his remarks, Jaishankar called for India to remain steadfast in pursuing its policies without being swayed by external commentary. He reiterated that the reality of international politics often involves nations acting in their own self-interest while simultaneously offering advice to others, a dynamic he believes India must navigate carefully.
Jaishankar’s visit to Luxembourg is part of a broader six-day trip to both France and Luxembourg, where he engages in discussions on various bilateral and multilateral issues impacting India and its global standing. His comments reflect a significant moment in India’s diplomatic engagement, particularly regarding its approach to military operations and international relations in a complex geopolitical landscape.
