Iran’s Foreign Minister Engages UN Nuclear Chief Ahead of US Talks
Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, met with Rafael Grossi, the Director-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in Geneva on February 17, 2026. This meeting occurred just before a second round of negotiations with the United States regarding Iran’s nuclear program.
During the discussions, Araghchi emphasized the importance of diplomatic engagement. He stated that he would also meet with Badr al-Busaidi, the Foreign Minister of Oman, who is facilitating the US-Iran talks scheduled for the following day in Geneva. The meeting with Grossi is part of Iran’s ongoing efforts to address concerns surrounding its nuclear activities while seeking a pathway to alleviate the stringent international sanctions imposed primarily by the United States.
In a related development, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Majid Takht-Ravanchi, indicated that Tehran may be open to compromise regarding its nuclear program. He highlighted that any willingness to negotiate would depend significantly on a reduction of the sanctions that have severely impacted the Iranian economy.
The backdrop to these discussions includes ongoing tensions over Iran’s nuclear ambitions, which many nations view as a potential threat to regional stability. The international community remains watchful of the evolving situation, given the implications for both nuclear non-proliferation and Middle Eastern geopolitics.
As negotiations progress, analysts suggest that the outcomes could shape the future of Iran’s relationships with both the United States and its regional neighbors. The meetings in Geneva are seen as a crucial step in addressing longstanding issues while opening a potential dialogue for broader engagement.
As the talks unfold, the international community is poised to see if constructive outcomes will emerge, particularly in light of Iran’s expressed willingness to discuss terms surrounding its nuclear program.
