India and Greece Strengthen Maritime Cooperation Through Naval Talks
Indian Navy chief, Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi, hosted Vice Admiral Dimitrios Eleftherios Kataras, chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff, in New Delhi on February 16, 2024. The meeting aimed to enhance maritime cooperation between India and Greece, focusing on navy-to-navy exercises and training exchanges.
Prior to their discussions, Vice Admiral Kataras received a ceremonial Guard of Honour at the South Block Lawns. An Indian Navy spokesperson later shared details of the meeting on social media platform X, emphasizing the commitment to expanding bilateral maritime cooperation through increased joint exercises and operational collaboration.
Both leaders reiterated their dedication to promoting maritime security and interoperability. The discussions also highlighted the significance of deepening professional engagements between the two navies.
Earlier this month, Greece’s National Defence Minister, Nikolaos-Georgios Dendias, visited India, invited by Indian Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. During their talks on February 9, the two ministers expressed intentions to bolster their respective indigenous defence industries. This partnership aligns with India’s ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative and Greece’s defence reforms outlined under ‘Agenda 2030.’
The Ministry of Defence released a statement indicating that the India-Greece Strategic Partnership is founded on shared values of peace, stability, freedom, and mutual respect. The dialogue between Singh and Dendias also encompassed various regional security issues, reinforcing their commitment to enhancing bilateral defence cooperation.
A Bilateral Military Cooperation Plan for 2026 was exchanged, laying the groundwork for future military engagements between both nations’ armed forces. This structured approach aims to solidify ties and foster collaborative efforts in ensuring regional stability.
On February 6, India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, met with Dendias to discuss strategic and security matters. Following their conversation, Jaishankar expressed his appreciation for the insights and assessments shared by the Greek minister.
The ongoing dialogues and agreements signify a proactive approach to strengthening defence ties, reflecting the increasing importance of maritime collaboration for both nations. As India and Greece pursue these initiatives, the emphasis on shared strategic interests aims to enhance security in an evolving geopolitical landscape.
