Former Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele has expressed concerns regarding the development of midfielder Moises Caicedo, emphasizing the need for the club to provide him with experienced colleagues to maximize his potential. Caicedo, who joined Chelsea from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer of 2023, has made a notable impact, featuring in 123 matches across all competitions and contributing seven goals and 11 assists.

The 24-year-old Ecuadorian has demonstrated his talent this season, scoring four goals and providing one assist in 25 matches. In the current Premier League campaign, he has netted three goals and assisted once in 16 appearances, helping Chelsea maintain their competitive edge. As of now, the team sits in eighth place after 21 matches, trailing Premier League leaders Arsenal by 18 points.

Makelele, who made over 200 appearances for Chelsea between 2003 and 2008, highlighted the importance of surrounding Caicedo with seasoned players. In a recent interview with Sky Sports, he noted Caicedo’s crucial role in Chelsea’s impressive 5-1 victory over Charlton Athletic in the FA Cup on January 12, 2024. Although Caicedo did not score or assist in that match, he made a significant impact with four key passes, completing 129 out of 139 passes, and attempting five long balls.

Chelsea’s commanding performance against Charlton saw five different players score, with Jorrel Hato opening the scoring in the fourth minute of first-half stoppage time. Tosin Adarabioyo doubled the lead shortly after the break, but Miles Leaburn pulled one back for the hosts. Any hopes of a Charlton comeback were quickly dashed as Chelsea’s Marc Guéhi, Pedro Neto, and Enzo Fernández completed the rout.

Looking ahead, Chelsea will face a challenging matchup against Premier League leaders Arsenal in the first leg of the EFL Cup semi-final on January 14, 2024. Following that, they will host Brentford at Stamford Bridge in a league encounter just three days later.

Makelele’s insights reflect a broader understanding of the challenges young players face in high-pressure environments. Ensuring that Caicedo receives adequate support could be key to his continued development and Chelsea’s overall success in the season.
