India’s Top Badminton Players Aim for Victory at 2026 India Open
The 2026 India Open Super 750 tournament kicks off in New Delhi on January 10, bringing together some of the world’s best badminton players. Indian stars PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen, and the men’s doubles duo of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty will lead the charge for home advantage as they seek to overcome a challenging field and start the year with a significant victory.
India’s opening performance at the Malaysia Open Super 1000 last week was largely disappointing, with the exception of Sindhu, who reached the semifinals. Young talent Ayush Shetty also made a commendable effort, but the overall results highlighted the tough competition that lies ahead. Since the India Open’s elevation to Super 750 status in 2023, no Indian player has claimed the title, although Rankireddy and Shetty reached the finals previously.
Challenges and Expectations at Home
Competing at home comes with its advantages, but the pressure is palpable. The tournament will unfold in a newly refurbished hall at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex, presenting a fresh setting for all participants. The larger venue introduces variables such as drift and wind conditions, which can influence performance. Nevertheless, the home crowd is expected to provide a supportive atmosphere that could elevate the players’ performances.
The tournament also serves as a preparatory stage for the upcoming BWF World Championships scheduled for August, making it essential for players to establish their form early in the season. Several notable matchups are set to unfold in the opening rounds. Lakshya Sen will face Ayush Shetty, marking a reunion of two players who train at the same academy. With Sen leading their previous encounters 2-0, the matchup is anticipated to be an exciting contest, especially as both players are familiar with each other’s styles.
The veterans Kidambi Srikanth and HS Prannoy will also commence their 2026 campaigns at this event. Following injury setbacks that have seen them fall out of the top 32 rankings, both players will be eager for a strong showing. Srikanth is set to face fellow Indian Tharun Mannepalli, while Prannoy will compete against Lee Cheuk Yiu, who recently demonstrated strong form by defeating top competitors.
Sindhu’s Pursuit of Glory and Doubles Ambitions
Sindhu began her year positively with a semifinal appearance in Malaysia, and she aims to continue that momentum. She will open her tournament against Vietnam’s Nguyen Thuy Linh, a match she is expected to win. However, a likely second-round clash against world No 2 Wang Zhi Yi poses a significant challenge. Sindhu has historically performed well against Wang, including a victory in the World Championship finals. The home crowd’s support may prove vital in helping her navigate this tough matchup.
In the men’s doubles, the spotlight is firmly on Rankireddy and Shetty, who enter as third seeds. They have shown impressive form, reaching two finals in the last four editions of the tournament. Despite a quarterfinal exit in Malaysia, they are determined to channel the enthusiasm of the local crowd and go all the way in New Delhi.
The tournament also features a strong representation in women’s and mixed doubles, with six Indian pairs in women’s doubles and four in mixed doubles. This provides valuable exposure for younger players, even if the competition remains fierce.
As the 2026 India Open unfolds, the performance of India’s badminton stars will be closely watched, with hopes high for a successful start to the season. Eurosport will provide coverage in India, and matches will also be available on the BWF’s official YouTube channel.
