The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has clarified that it has not received any updates from the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding Bangladesh’s request to change the venue for its matches in the upcoming Men’s T20 World Cup. This statement comes amid discussions between the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the ICC regarding the potential relocation of matches due to security concerns.

The T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, is set to commence on February 7, 2024. Bangladesh’s cricketing body has formally requested that its matches be moved to Sri Lanka, citing rising tensions between nations in the region. The BCB has indicated that the ICC has acknowledged its letter and assured that the matter will be reviewed.

ICC Evaluates Bangladesh’s Match Locations

Reports from Monday suggest that the ICC is exploring alternative venues for Bangladesh’s matches. Despite Bangladesh’s preference for Sri Lanka, venues in Chennai and Trivandrum may be emerging as possible options, with Kolkata and Mumbai initially designated as the host cities.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia emphasized that the Indian board has not been informed about any potential changes. “The BCCI has not received any communication regarding the matter of shifting Bangladesh matches to Chennai or anywhere else,” he stated. “It is beyond our control. It is a matter of communication between the BCB and the ICC, as the ICC is the governing body. If the ICC conveys any decision to us regarding a change of venue, the BCCI, as the host, will take the necessary steps. At present, we are not privy to any such information.”

According to the current match schedule, Bangladesh is set to play three games in Kolkata. These fixtures include matches against the West Indies on February 7, Italy on February 9, and England on February 14. Following these matches, they are scheduled to move to Mumbai to face Nepal on February 17.

As discussions continue, the cricketing community awaits a decisive response from the ICC regarding the venue change for Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup matches. The situation remains fluid, with the implications of security and logistics at the forefront of considerations.
