More than 900,000 devotees participated in the Makar Sankranti celebrations at the Sangam in Prayagraj on Wednesday morning. This event, part of the ongoing Magh Mela, attracted large crowds as people flocked to the ghats to take a holy dip in the Ganga. While many regions across India celebrated the harvest festival on January 15, Uttar Pradesh will officially observe Makar Sankranti on Thursday, January 16.

According to Superintendent of Police (Magh Mela) Neeraj Pandey, the early morning saw an influx of pilgrims. “By 6 am, over nine lakh devotees had taken a dip in the Ganga and at the Sangam,” he stated. The total number of pilgrims is expected to rise significantly, with estimates suggesting attendance could reach between 10 million and 15 million by the end of the day.

Security Measures and Infrastructure

In anticipation of the massive crowds, authorities have deployed over 10,000 police personnel throughout the Mela area to ensure safety and facilitate traffic flow. The Magh Mela has garnered significant participation this year, with over 3.1 million devotees reported during the Paush Purnima bathing festival earlier in January.

To manage the influx of visitors, officials have established 42 temporary parking facilities capable of accommodating over 100,000 vehicles. Additionally, a total of 12,100 feet of bathing ghats have been constructed, equipped with essential facilities including changing rooms and toilets. To maintain water levels in the Ganga, authorities report that 8,000 cusecs of water are being released daily from the Ganga barrage in Kanpur.

Significance of the Magh Mela

The Magh Mela is a significant spiritual event lasting 44 days, held during the Hindu holy month of Magh, which typically falls between January and February. It takes place at the Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, the Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers. The celebration is steeped in tradition, featuring rituals such as Kalpavas and the Panchkosi Parikrama.

Key dates for the current Magh Mela include January 15 for Makar Sankranti, January 18 for Mauni Amavasya, January 23 for Vasant Panchami, February 1 for Maghi Purnima, and February 15 for Maha Shivratri. The next Magh Mela is scheduled for January 3 to February 15, 2026, promising to continue the rich heritage of this spiritual gathering.

With a blend of faith, tradition, and community, the Magh Mela remains a vital cultural event, drawing millions to partake in its rituals and celebrations, reinforcing connections among devotees from diverse backgrounds.
