Mumbai Artist Rouble Nagi Named Finalist for $1 Million Global Teacher Prize
Mumbai-based artist and educator Rouble Nagi has been recognized as one of the top ten finalists for the prestigious $1 million Global Teacher Prize 2026. Announced in London on March 15, 2026, Nagi’s selection highlights her impactful work in education, particularly within underserved communities across India.
As the founder of the Rouble Nagi Art Foundation and Misaal India, Nagi has dedicated her career to improving educational opportunities for children living in slums and rural areas. The Global Teacher Prize, organized by the UK-based Varkey Foundation in collaboration with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), aims to honor exceptional teachers who make significant contributions to society.
Nagi expressed her gratitude for the recognition, stating, “I’m deeply grateful to GEMS Education and the Varkey Foundation for providing this extraordinary platform and championing the voices of teachers. This gives me the momentum to go further – reaching more children, breaking down barriers, and ensuring every learner can not only access education but also receive the support to stay and succeed, regardless of their circumstances.”
Impactful Initiatives in Education
With over 20 years of experience in the field, Nagi has transformed education in India’s most underserved regions through her pioneering approach. Under her leadership, Misaal India has established more than 800 learning centers, recruited over 600 volunteers and paid teachers, and created a scalable educational model that addresses the academic, social, and economic needs of children.
Nagi’s teaching philosophy integrates foundational academics with essential life skills, vocational training, and creative expression. This comprehensive approach not only aims to foster academic knowledge but also to build confidence, agency, and aspirations among young learners. One of her notable projects, the “Living Walls of Learning,” transforms walls into vibrant murals that serve as educational tools for entire communities.
The Global Teacher Prize has garnered more than 100,000 applications and nominations from around the world, emphasizing the critical role of teachers in shaping future generations. Sunny Varkey, founder of the Global Teacher Prize and Varkey Foundation, remarked, “This honor recognizes not only what you teach, but the incredible impact you make every day. Your work extends far beyond the classroom – it touches lives, shapes communities, and helps define our shared future.”
Acknowledging the Global Need for Educational Investment
The other finalists for the 2026 prize include educators from various backgrounds, such as Adeola Olufunke Akinsulure, Alfonso Filippone, Ana Hernandez Revuelta, and Timothy James Stiven. The winner will be selected by the Global Teacher Prize Academy, composed of prominent individuals, and announced at the World Governments Summit in Dubai next month.
UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education, Stefania Giannini, stated, “UNESCO is honored to stand alongside the Global Teacher Prize in celebrating the extraordinary commitment of teachers everywhere. Our world is navigating profound challenges – from teacher shortages and rapid technological shifts to the urgent demands of climate action. If we are to build a just, inclusive, and sustainable future, we must recognize a simple truth: we cannot rise to this moment unless we invest in teachers.”
Rouble Nagi’s recognition as a finalist not only highlights her individual contributions but also underscores the broader necessity for investment in education and the vital role teachers play in addressing global challenges.
