Kolkata Fire Temple Rises from Ashes, Community Celebrates Miracle

A historic fire temple in Kolkata has captured the attention and hearts of many after it seemingly rose from the ashes following a devastating fire. The inner sanctum, home to the sacred fire that had burned continuously for 126 years, was also reported to be unharmed. This fire had been extinguished only recently due to internal disputes among trustees. Despite the challenges faced by its guardians, the local community, particularly shopkeepers from the area, demonstrated their commitment to preserving the temple. They reportedly contributed to significant restoration efforts costing approximately Rs 80 lakh, completing the facade work just prior to the fire.

Md Islam, an 87-year-old who has cared for the property for 45 years, expressed that his son, Iftekar Husain, along with other local shopkeepers, felt compelled to act. “We felt we could not flourish at the expense of the temple’s decline,” he stated. Their initiative to repair and maintain the temple’s exterior highlights a profound sense of community and shared responsibility.
