MF Husain’s Art Reimagined: New Museum Opens in Doha

The artistic legacy of M F Husain has taken a significant step forward with the opening of a new museum in Doha, Qatar, dedicated to his life and work. The museum, named Lawh Wa Qalam, which translates to “The Tablet & The Pen,” stands as a testament to Husain’s impact on modern art and serves as a bridge between Eastern and Western cultures. This development marks a remarkable comeback for the revered Indian artist, who passed away in 2011.

The museum spans over 3,000 square meters and features a striking facade adorned with thousands of pastel blue tiles. The architectural design, led by Martand Khosla, reflects several layers of meaning and cultural references, drawing inspiration from Husain’s artistic vision. Khosla emphasized the importance of capturing both the essence of Husain’s work and the functionality of the space, stating, “Some interpretations are literal but some are metaphorical like his cultural links and larger sense of identity.”

Husain’s dream of establishing a museum dedicated to his art was realized through the efforts of Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, who promised to fulfil this vision after his death. The opening of the museum in March 2025 coincided with a record-breaking auction of his painting Gram Yatra (1954) for Rs. 118 crores, solidifying his status as the most expensive Indian artist.

The gala event featured a spectacular video display that showcased Husain’s iconic artworks, including his famous horses and Kathakali dancers. Attendees included prominent figures from the art world, such as Lakshmi Mittal and Gauri Khan, who admired the vibrant animations of Husain’s art brought to life on the museum’s facade.

Inside, the museum houses more than 150 works by Husain, displayed across two levels. The first collection features pieces from his early career in India, alongside personal artifacts such as his last used paint palette and brushes. These items provide insight into the life of an artist who faced significant challenges, including protests and threats over his controversial works.

The second collection showcases Husain’s later works created during his time in Doha. Notable pieces include Battle of Badr (2008), which depicts a significant military victory in Islamic history, and Zuljanah (2007), a tribute to the Arabian stallion associated with Imam Hussain. These works highlight Husain’s deep connection to Arab culture and history.

Curator Noof Mohammad emphasized the diverse range of Husain’s artistic expression, explaining that he never confined himself to a single medium. The museum also features a kinetic installation titled “Seeroo fi al Ardh,” conceptualized by Husain in 2009, which translates to “Walk in the Land.” This piece integrates various elements of his artistic journey, showcasing the evolution of his style.

Husain’s commitment to his legacy is evident in the meticulous planning he left behind for his installations. He once remarked, “The entire ensemble is like a performance of dancing horses in crystal glass set to the tune of traditional song of horsemanship, chivalry and strength.” This vision materialized in the museum, where handblown Murano glass sculptures of horses create a stunning visual experience.

The opening of the museum not only celebrates Husain’s contributions to art but also symbolizes the enduring spirit of creativity and cultural exchange. By bridging the rich histories of Indian and Arab civilizations, Lawh Wa Qalam stands as a new landmark in Doha’s Education City, promising to foster dialogue and appreciation for the arts.
