Trump Reads Rubio’s Note During White House Meeting with Executives
During a meeting at the White House on January 9, 2024, US President Donald Trump created an unexpected moment by reading a handwritten note from Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State. The meeting included executives from major oil and gas companies, including representatives from ConocoPhillips.
As Trump turned to Ryan Lance, the CEO of ConocoPhillips, to invite him to speak, he revealed that Rubio had given him a note. In a light-hearted manner, Trump opened the note and read aloud the message: “go back to Chevron.” His words elicited a moment of confusion from Vice President JD Vance, who was seated nearby.
Trump continued, “They want to discuss something. Go back to Chevron,” while both Vance and Rubio smiled beside him. The atmosphere in the room was relaxed, with Trump jokingly adding, “Go ahead, I’m going back to Chevron,” before placing the note on the table. He then affectionately patted Rubio on the back, expressing gratitude by saying, “Thank you, Marco.”
The incident highlights the often informal interactions that can occur in high-level meetings, even when discussing critical business matters. With oil prices and energy policy remaining significant topics on the agenda, the meeting’s tone provided a glimpse into the camaraderie among the administration and industry leaders.
While the note’s content was lighthearted, it underscores the ongoing discussions within the energy sector, especially concerning the roles of major companies like Chevron and ConocoPhillips. The meeting reflects the administration’s efforts to engage with industry leaders to navigate the complexities of energy policy amidst fluctuating market conditions.
As discussions continue on energy strategies and economic recovery, moments like these remind observers of the human element in politics and business, where humor can play a role even in serious conversations.
