Doctors Urge Early Checks for Increasing Thyroid Cancer Cases

Global awareness of thyroid cancer remains low despite rising detection rates, particularly in India. Medical professionals emphasize the importance of recognizing early warning signs and seeking timely medical evaluations. While thyroid cancer has a high survival rate when diagnosed early, delayed treatment can complicate recovery.

According to global cancer data, the incidence of thyroid cancer has steadily increased over the past two decades. This trend is especially pronounced among women and younger adults. In India, studies reveal regional variations, with higher rates reported in certain areas of southern India.

Dr. Nitin Leekha, Senior Director of Surgical Oncology at Max Super Speciality Hospital in New Delhi, explains the significance of early detection. “The thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland at the front of the neck, but it plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism, heart rate, and body temperature,” he notes.

Many patients tend to overlook the initial signs of thyroid cancer, which are often painless. The most common early indicator is a painless lump or swelling in the neck, frequently discovered during routine activities such as shaving or wearing jewellery. Other warning signs include persistent hoarseness, voice changes lasting several weeks, difficulty swallowing, or a constant sensation of something being stuck in the throat.

In some cases, patients may experience discomfort while breathing or a tight feeling in the neck, particularly when lying down, if an enlarging tumour is pressing against the windpipe. Additional symptoms that warrant attention include persistent neck or throat pain radiating to the ear, swollen and painless lymph nodes in the neck, and a chronic, unexplained dry cough.

Dr. Leekha emphasizes the importance of medical evaluation for any persistent symptoms. “Experiencing one or more of these symptoms does not automatically mean cancer,” he cautions. “The encouraging aspect is that thyroid cancer has one of the highest survival rates among cancers, particularly when detected early.”

Diagnosis typically involves a combination of tests, including a neck ultrasound, blood tests, and fine-needle aspiration biopsy. Treatment options may vary based on the type and stage of cancer, including surgery, radioactive iodine therapy, or targeted treatments.

Health experts stress that while thyroid cancer may remain asymptomatic in its early stages, subtle signals from the body should not be ignored. Early evaluation can transform what could be a serious diagnosis into a highly manageable condition. With increased awareness and timely checks, patients can significantly improve their chances of successful treatment and recovery.
