SHRC Demands Swift Legal Action Against Pharma Firm After Drug Mix-Up
The Kerala State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) has ordered prompt legal action against a pharmaceutical company following a serious incident involving a drug label mismatch at the Regional Cancer Centre (RCC) in Thiruvananthapuram. The situation arose when a chemotherapy drug intended for lung cancer was found in packaging labeled for a different medication aimed at treating brain cancer.
Alexander Thomas, chairperson of the SHRC and a former judge, issued the directive based on media reports and previous inquiries into the incident. The SHRC had already initiated a comprehensive investigation into the matter, which raised significant concerns about patient safety and the integrity of medical supply chains.
On July 9, 2022, RCC pharmacy staff discovered the label mismatch while preparing medications for a patient. Among ten packs of the drug Temozolomide 100 mg, two packets were incorrectly labeled as Etoposide 50 mg, indicating that the wrong drug was packaged under a false label. This error posed serious risks to patients relying on accurate medication for their treatment.
Following the discovery, the State Drugs Controller took immediate action by confiscating five packs of the mislabeled drugs and presenting them to the court as evidence. Legal proceedings against the company responsible for supplying the drug have commenced, and the firm has been blacklisted to prevent future occurrences.
The SHRC’s chairperson emphasized the urgency of the situation by directing the RCC director to ensure that legal actions against the pharmaceutical company are resolved swiftly, highlighting the importance of accountability in healthcare.
The commission’s involvement underscores a growing recognition of the need for stringent oversight in pharmaceutical practices. The RCC’s commitment to patient safety is reflected in its proactive measures to rectify the situation and prevent similar incidents in the future. The outcome of this case may pave the way for stricter regulations in drug labeling and distribution, ultimately enhancing the safety of patients across the region.
As investigations continue, the SHRC’s actions serve as a reminder of the critical importance of accuracy in medical supplies, emphasizing that even minor errors can lead to significant consequences in healthcare settings. The commission’s efforts aim not only to address this particular incident but also to foster a culture of safety and responsibility within the pharmaceutical industry.
