Surgeons Restore Carpenter’s Hand in 30-Minute Procedure
A carpenter from Kalyan, India, received a life-changing surgical procedure to relieve his debilitating Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, thanks to the skilled team at Thane Civil Hospital. The surgery, which typically involves considerable costs, was performed free of charge and completed in just 30 minutes.
For the past 30 years, Ashok Sharma had endured severe pain and discomfort due to Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This condition, caused by compression of the median nerve in the wrist, had significantly impacted his daily life and work. The persistent strain from years of carpentry had led to symptoms such as slow hand movement, tingling in the fingers, and increasing difficulty in performing essential tasks.
After consulting a private hospital, Sharma faced a staggering surgery cost estimated between ₹100,000 and ₹150,000, a sum that was beyond his means. Unable to afford the treatment, he and his family were left in a difficult position until they learned about the free surgical services offered by Thane Civil Hospital.
Under the expert guidance of District Surgeon Dr. Kailas Pawar, a dedicated team led by Dr. Dhiraj Mahangade, an Orthopaedic Specialist, took on Sharma’s case. The surgery, which involved relieving pressure on the median nerve, was successfully carried out on January 24, 2024. Remarkably, the entire procedure took only half an hour, demonstrating the proficiency of the medical team.
Post-surgery, Sharma is reported to be stable, and reports indicate that he is gradually regaining normal hand movement. This successful intervention not only alleviates his long-standing pain but also restores his ability to work, securing his livelihood once again.
This case highlights the critical role of public healthcare systems in providing accessible medical care to those in need. The Thane Civil Hospital’s initiative to offer free surgeries has made a significant impact on the lives of individuals like Sharma, empowering them to reclaim their lives and work without the burden of financial stress.
Such instances illustrate the vital importance of community health services and the potential to change lives through dedicated medical care.
