Adar Poonawalla, CEO of the Serum Institute, has officially announced his intention to bid for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the 2025 champions of the Indian Premier League (IPL). In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on October 12, 2023, Poonawalla stated, “Over the next few months, will be putting in a STRONG and COMPETITIVE bid for @RCBTweets, one of the best teams in the IPL.” His comments have generated significant interest as RCB is one of the most valued franchises in the league.

Poonawalla’s ambition to acquire RCB follows his earlier remarks in October, where he expressed that at the right valuation, RCB presents a compelling opportunity. His bold move has placed him among several prominent figures vying for ownership of the franchise, including Nikhil Kamath, co-founder of the brokerage platform Zerodha, and Ranjan Pai, chairman of the Manipal Education and Medical Group (MEMG).

History and Ownership of RCB

Founded in 2008, Royal Challengers Bengaluru was initially acquired by Vijay Mallya, then chairman of United Spirits Ltd (USL) and Kingfisher Airlines, for approximately $112 million. The franchise operates under Royal Challengers Sports Pvt Ltd (RCSPL). Following Mallya’s financial difficulties and subsequent departure from India, USL came under the ownership of Diageo, which has maintained total control of RCB since 2016 through RCSPL.

The franchise has gained notoriety not only for its competitive spirit but also for its commercial success. According to a report by Houlihan Lokey, Inc., a global investment bank based in the United States, RCB is currently the top-valued IPL team, boasting a brand value of $269 million. This valuation underscores the franchise’s appeal in the sports market and highlights why it is a coveted asset for potential buyers.

As the bidding process unfolds in the coming months, Poonawalla’s commitment to a strong financial offer may set the stage for transformative changes at RCB. His leadership at the Serum Institute, a company renowned for its contributions to global health, adds a layer of intrigue to this potential acquisition.

The outcome of this bid could significantly impact the landscape of the IPL, where ownership stakes not only influence team dynamics but also contribute to broader sponsorship and marketing strategies. As more details emerge, stakeholders and fans alike will be watching closely to see if Poonawalla can secure a deal that could reshape the future of one of cricket’s most beloved franchises.
