CM Fadnavis Promises No Political Interference in Marathi Literature

The 99th Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan was formally inaugurated on October 20, 2023, in Satara, with Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis assuring attendees that politics would not intrude into Marathi literature. Addressing a gathering of esteemed writers, scholars, and cultural figures, Fadnavis emphasized, “Writers may choose to enter politics, but politics should not be brought into literature. As long as I am the chief minister, there will be no political interference in the Marathi literary sphere.”

The event took place at Shahu Stadium, a venue that set the stage for significant discussions on the future of Marathi literature. Senior author Vishwas Patil assumed the role of conference president, succeeding outgoing president Dr. Tara Bhavalkar. In his inaugural address, Patil urged attendees not to conflate the Marathi language with issues of caste and religion. He reiterated the importance of maintaining the language’s inclusive tradition, warning that associating it with social divisions could undermine its progressive values.

Renowned Hindi author Dr. Mridula Garg, serving as the chief guest, praised Marathi literature’s foundational role in Indian literary history. She highlighted the emergence of Dalit literature within the Marathi context, describing it as the “soul of the Marathi literary world.” Garg commended Marathi literature for its capacity to give voice to the marginalized and oppressed.

Dr. Bhavalkar also spoke during the event, stressing the necessity for increased support for writers and publishers from rural areas. She voiced concerns regarding proposals to introduce Hindi or other Indian languages at the primary school level, asserting that the literary community stands firmly against such initiatives. The secretary of Sahitya Mahamandal, Milind Joshi, echoed her sentiments, reinforcing the apprehensions expressed by other writers.

On the topic of language policy, Fadnavis reiterated that Marathi would remain a mandatory subject in schools across the state. He indicated that any decisions regarding the introduction of Hindi or other languages would follow a comprehensive review of the Narendra Jadhav Committee report, ensuring that any changes are made with careful consideration.

The inaugural session successfully set the tone for the conference, which aims to foster extensive discussions surrounding language, culture, social justice, and the future of Marathi literature.
