Thousands Gather for Suna Besha Celebration on Pausha Purnima
The Srimandir in Puri celebrated Pausha Purnima on January 6, 2024, with the vibrant Suna Besha ritual honoring Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra. This significant event attracts thousands of devotees from across Odisha, marking an essential date in the temple’s annual calendar.
On this auspicious occasion, the **Pushyabhisheka** ritual was performed in accordance with the temple’s traditions. A total of **108 pots** of water mixed with ghee, which had been preserved in the **Adhibasa Griha** since January 5, were sanctified with sandalwood paste. These consecrated pots were utilized for the **Abhisheka** of Lord Jagannath, followed by the customary series of rituals conducted under the supervision of temple servitors.
Sridevi’s Ritual Progression
After receiving the **Agyanmala** from Lord Jagannath, Maa Lakshmi proceeded in her Sridevi palanquin to **Jagamohan**. There, rituals such as **Majana** and **Banaka Lagi** were performed, culminating in Maa Lakshmi being adorned in Suna Besha. This marks a crucial aspect of the day’s observances, showcasing the intricate relationship between the deities.
The Suna Besha of Lord Jagannath took place on the **Ratna Singhasan**. This adornment is performed five times each year, with four of these occasions occurring on the Ratna Singhasan—specifically on Pausha Purnima, Phalguna Purnima, Kartika Purnima, and Vijaya Dashami. On **Hari Sayana Ekadashi**, the lord appears in Suna Besha on his chariot, further enhancing the spiritual experience for devotees.
Gold Adornments for Divine Darshan
During the Suna Besha, Lord Jagannath was adorned with various gold ornaments, including a **Kirita** (crown), **Sripayara**, **Sribhuja**, **Harida Mala**, and **Bahada Mala**. Devotees gathered to witness the divine darshan, fully engaged in the longstanding customs of the temple.
The event exemplifies the rich cultural heritage of Odisha and highlights the deep devotion of the attendees. As they participated in the rituals and celebrations, the sense of community and spirituality was palpable, reinforcing the significance of this day in the lives of many.
The Suna Besha ceremony is not only a religious observance but also a celebration of faith, drawing attention to the historical and cultural importance of the Srimandir and its traditions. As thousands of devotees witnessed the rituals unfold, the spirit of Pausha Purnima resonated throughout Puri, leaving an enduring impression on all who participated.
