Dubai marked the turn of the year with a breathtaking spectacle, featuring a woman conducting an orchestra mid-air near the iconic Burj Khalifa. On December 31, 2025, as the clock approached midnight, thousands of spectators gathered to witness a unique blend of performance art and dazzling fireworks, welcoming 2026 in an unforgettable manner.

The highlight of the evening was the performance led by Lebanese conductor Yasmina Sabbah, who soared above the Dubai Fountain area in a striking red gown. With her flowing attire emphasizing her elevated position, Sabbah conducted the Firdaus Orchestra, seamlessly integrating live music with synchronized fireworks against the stunning backdrop of the world’s tallest building.

The opportunity for this extraordinary performance arose from an unexpected email inviting her to conduct while flying. Sabbah, who has previously performed in Dubai during Expo 2020, accepted the challenge enthusiastically. In a conversation with Annahar, she described the weeks of training leading up to the event. “We had a lot of training, but it was an amazing experience,” she stated, reflecting on the thrill of conducting as the midnight countdown commenced.

As the clock struck twelve, Dubai’s skyline lit up with a spectacular display of fireworks, laser effects, and synchronized LED lights, captivating both those in attendance and viewers online. The performance by Sabbah and the orchestra was a key element of what Emaar touted as the world’s largest New Year’s Eve celebration. For those who missed it live, the mid-air performance is set to be repeated daily until January 7, and it will also be streamed on YouTube.

Elaborate Celebrations and Safety Measures

The celebrations included a 20-minute Dubai Fountain show that combined water, fire, music, and acrobatics, enhancing the overall experience for attendees. The event attracted hundreds of thousands of people to Downtown Dubai, prompting local authorities to implement extensive safety and traffic management measures. Roads near the Burj Khalifa were progressively closed, and public transport services were extended, with additional free shuttle buses provided to accommodate the influx of visitors.

Multiple free public viewing areas were designated around the city, including popular spots like Boulevard Heights and Burj Vista. These zones featured LED screens to ensure that everyone could enjoy the fireworks and entertainment, even from a distance.

A Festival of Culture and Innovation

The New Year’s Eve festivities in Dubai did not end with the midnight celebration. The events extended into an eight-day festival filled with cultural and entertainment activities throughout the region. In total, more than 40 locations across the UAE hosted fireworks displays, including landmarks such as Burj Al Arab and Atlantis The Palm, helping to distribute crowds and enhance the celebratory atmosphere.

What distinguished the 2026 celebrations was the innovative fusion of performance art with traditional fireworks displays. The mid-air orchestra was not merely a viral moment; it represented Dubai’s ambition and creativity, showcasing how technology can elevate the experience of welcoming a new year.

With millions tuning in from around the globe and record crowds at the event, Dubai’s New Year’s Eve celebration reaffirmed its position as a leader in global festivities, renowned for its extravagant displays and innovative approaches to entertainment.
