Sivasagar Enforces Night Ban on E-Rickshaws to Enhance Safety
The Sivasagar district administration in Assam has implemented a nighttime ban on e-rickshaws and e-carts, prohibiting their operation from 7 PM to 7 AM starting December 30, 2023. This decision aims to mitigate the heightened risk of road accidents during the winter months, particularly due to dense fog that significantly reduces visibility.
The measure was approved by Aayush Garg, the district commissioner and chairman of the Sivasagar District Road Safety Committee. According to Subhashish Baruah, the senior superintendent of police (SSP) in Sivasagar, the restriction serves the greater interest of public safety. “For the prevention of road traffic accidents during the ensuing foggy winter, plying of e-rickshaws and e-carts has been prohibited in Sivasagar district from 7 PM to 7 AM,” he stated.
Heightened Risks During Winter Fog
E-rickshaws and e-carts, which have gained popularity as local transportation options, are especially vulnerable during low-visibility conditions. Their lightweight design, inadequate lighting systems, and relatively slower speeds can make them difficult for other vehicles to detect in fog. The winter season in upper Assam typically brings heavy fog, blanketing the region during early mornings and evenings, which creates hazardous driving conditions.
Visibility can drop to dangerously low levels, complicating the ability of drivers to see pedestrians and other road users. E-rickshaws and e-carts, operating at lower speeds compared to motorised vehicles, are particularly affected by these conditions. The vehicles often lack sufficient lighting and reflective markers, rendering them nearly invisible in dense fog. Additionally, the open structure of e-rickshaws provides limited protection for passengers, increasing the risks during the thickest fog.
Compliance and Enforcement Measures
In light of this new regulation, the Sivasagar police are urging all e-rickshaw and e-cart drivers and owners to strictly adhere to the directive. SSP Baruah emphasized that any violations would be addressed according to applicable traffic regulations.
This initiative reflects a growing awareness of the need for enhanced safety measures in response to seasonal weather conditions. Local authorities are taking proactive steps to ensure the safety of all road users as they navigate the challenges posed by winter fog in the region.
