Religious Tensions Rise in Thiruparankundram Amid Political Maneuvering

Thiruparankundram, a historic site in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, has recently become a focal point for religious and political tensions. Known as the first of the six abodes of Lord Murugan, this area has long been celebrated for its religious coexistence, featuring significant sites such as the Subramaniya Swamy temple, the Kasi Viswanathan temple, and the Sikkander Badusha dargah. For centuries, both Hindu and Muslim communities have cohabited peacefully, sharing the space and local businesses.

The situation escalated in February 2023 when certain Muslim organizations called for the hillock to be renamed as Sikkandar Malai. This demand prompted a protest led by BJP leader H Raja, who labeled Thiruparankundram the “Ayodhya of South,” igniting religious passions. The controversy intensified when images surfaced showing individuals allegedly consuming meat at the hill, leading to a confrontation between Nawaz Kani, a local MP, and K Annamalai, the former Tamil Nadu BJP chief.

Despite the ongoing dispute, many residents of Thiruparankundram have expressed that the controversy is unnecessary, emphasizing their long-standing tradition of peaceful coexistence. While right-wing groups continue to amplify the issue, the BJP has shifted its strategy. Although the party withdrew its protests, it has not ceased its campaign, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah accusing the DMK government of supporting the renaming initiative. The BJP encourages Hindu participation in events such as the upcoming June 22 Murugan conference, aiming to consolidate Hindu support in Tamil Nadu.

The religious friction has not been limited to naming disputes. A significant controversy arose regarding the practice of animal sacrifice by Muslims at the dargah. In October, the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court prohibited this ritual following a split verdict earlier in June.

In December 2023, Rama Ravikumar, a Hindu activist, petitioned the Madurai Bench to change the traditional lighting of the Karthigai Deepam, requesting that it be done atop Thiruparankundram hill instead of the Deepa Mandapam, a practice that has existed for over a century. The court ruled in favor of Ravikumar, with Justice G R Swaminathan ordering the fire to be lit atop the hill. However, the traditional lighting at the Deepa Mandapam proceeded as scheduled, leading to further tensions.

As Ravikumar reported that the court’s order was not followed, Justice Swaminathan emphasized the necessity of upholding the court’s authority. In response to escalating tensions, the Madurai District Administration has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144, restricting gatherings in Thiruparankundram until further notice.

The situation in Thiruparankundram highlights the intricate interplay between religion and politics in Tamil Nadu, revealing how historical sites can become battlegrounds for contemporary political agendas. As the BJP seeks to strengthen its foothold in the state through the veneration of Lord Murugan, the residents of Thiruparankundram remain concerned about the potential for communal discord.
