UN Security Council Convenes Emergency Meeting on Venezuela Crisis

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is currently holding an emergency meeting in New York to address the recent capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro during a U.S. operation in Venezuela. This unprecedented action has raised significant concerns regarding international norms and the implications for regional stability.

Concerns Over National Sovereignty

Initiated at the request of Colombia and supported by China and Russia, the meeting is focused on the agenda item titled “Threats to International Peace and Security.” During the session, Rosemary DiCarlo, the Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, presented a statement on behalf of UN Secretary-General António Guterres. Guterres emphasized the necessity of respecting national sovereignty, political independence, and territorial integrity, warning that the U.S. operation sets a “dangerous precedent” for international relations.

In his address, Guterres cautioned that such actions could undermine the established global order. He articulated concerns regarding unilateral interventions that disregard the principles of the United Nations Charter.

Reactions from Member States

The representative from Cuba voiced strong opposition to U.S. actions, characterizing them as “hegemonic and criminal plans” that threaten regional stability. He accused the United States of employing unilateral coercive measures, which he described as “economic asphyxiation” and “maritime terrorism.” His remarks highlighted a perceived disregard for international law and the UN Charter, and he called for the immediate release of President Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores, labeling their capture as an act of imperialist aggression.

Brazil’s delegate, Sérgio França Danese, also condemned the armed intervention in Venezuela, describing it as a blatant violation of international law. He asserted that “South America is a zone of peace” and warned that the U.S. actions, including bombings on Venezuelan territory, cross an “unacceptable line.” Danese further linked weakened global governance to the escalation of conflicts and humanitarian crises, noting that military expenditures are nearing $2.7 trillion.
