Tubectomy Performed Under Mobile Light in Jharkhand Sparks Outrage
A tubectomy performed under the beam of a mobile phone flashlight in a government health facility in Hazaribag, Jharkhand, has sparked widespread outrage. A video of the procedure, which was conducted after the clinic’s lights went out, has gone viral, leading local health authorities to initiate an investigation.
The incident took place at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Keredari on December 13, 2023, but the video surfaced on social media on December 18. It shows the surgical team continuing the operation under the poor lighting of a mobile phone, raising serious concerns about patient safety and the conditions in which medical procedures are conducted.
Ashok Kumar, the Civil Surgeon of Hazaribagh, confirmed that the surgery was indeed performed during a power outage. He stated that the CHC is equipped with a generator, but the transition to backup power took longer than expected, necessitating the use of the mobile phone for illumination.
The health department has identified a community health worker, referred to as a ‘sahiya’, who recorded the video during the surgery. Kumar indicated that the worker would face disciplinary measures for sharing the video online, which has drawn significant public attention. A show-cause letter will be issued to her as part of the administrative response.
Investigation Underway
The district health department is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Officials aim to determine whether proper protocols were followed during the surgery and assess the adequacy of emergency procedures at the health centre. This incident has raised critical questions about the quality of healthcare in remote areas and the preparedness of facilities to handle unexpected situations.
The viral nature of the video has prompted public discourse on the challenges faced by healthcare providers in rural regions, particularly regarding infrastructure and resources. As the investigation unfolds, local authorities are under pressure to ensure that similar situations do not arise in the future.
The actions taken in response to this incident will not only address the current situation but may also influence policy changes aimed at improving healthcare standards in Jharkhand and beyond.
