Punjab Increases Health Insurance to ₹10 Lakh for Families
The Punjab government has announced an increase in health insurance coverage to ₹10 lakh per family under the Mukh Mantri Sehat Bima Yojana, set to take effect next month. This new initiative aims to extend health coverage to approximately 65 lakh families across the state, marking a significant expansion from the current beneficiaries.
The previous health insurance scheme, introduced in July 2023, provided coverage for about 45 lakh families, with many enrolled under the Mukh Mantri Sarbat Sehat Bima Yojana, which offered a maximum of ₹5 lakh per year. The increase in coverage reflects the Punjab government’s commitment to enhancing healthcare access for its residents.
Harpal Singh Cheema, the Punjab Health Minister, confirmed that the scheme will be implemented within the current fiscal year, estimating a total expenditure of ₹600 crore. This investment will involve collaboration with insurance agencies and private hospitals in the state to ensure comprehensive healthcare services for the targeted families.
Under the revamped scheme, families will benefit from a broader range of medical treatments and services, significantly improving the financial protection available for health-related expenses. The Punjab government’s initiative comes at a critical time, aiming to alleviate the healthcare burden on low- and middle-income families.
By increasing the health insurance cap, the Punjab government seeks to enhance the quality of life for its citizens, providing peace of mind through better healthcare coverage. As the rollout approaches, the administration is expected to finalize partnerships with local healthcare providers to facilitate access to necessary medical care for the newly covered families.
This move represents a proactive step in addressing public health needs and ensuring that more families can receive timely and effective treatment without the fear of financial hardship.
