Man Arrested in Palghar Murder Case Links to 1998 Crime in UP

The recent arrest of a 42-year-old man in connection with a long-unsolved murder case in Palghar, Maharashtra, has revealed his involvement in a similar crime dating back to 1998 in Uttar Pradesh. According to local authorities, Avinash Lalta Prasad Soni was apprehended on December 22, 2023, after years of evading capture.

Soni was originally implicated in a murder case that occurred in 2007 over brokerage money in Nalasopara. At that time, he and several accomplices were charged, but while his co-defendants were arrested, Soni managed to escape. He reportedly lived in Itarsi, Madhya Pradesh, under a false identity for many years before police received actionable intelligence leading to his capture in Naigaon East, near Mumbai.

Upon his arrest, Soni provided a startling confession, admitting to a murder committed during the Holi festival in 1998 in Azamgarh, Uttar Pradesh. He claimed that he and four other individuals were involved in the crime, which had remained unsolved for decades. Senior Inspector Vishal Valvi from the Nalasopara police station confirmed this development, stating, “We are taking further action after receiving information from Kotwali police station in Azamgarh.”
