Israeli Strikes Target Iranian Leaders, India Calls for Restraint
Israeli airstrikes on Saturday have reportedly resulted in the deaths of key Iranian military figures, including Amir Nasirzadeh, Iran’s Defence Minister, and Mohammed Pakpour, a commander of the Revolutionary Guards. Reports indicate that these strikes were aimed at destabilizing Iranian leadership, with Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, believed to be the primary target. He has reportedly been relocated to a safer location.
Escalating Conflict and Iranian Response
The attacks mark a significant escalation in tensions between Iran and Israel, with Iran asserting that it has retaliated against targets in various Middle Eastern cities, including Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Bahrain. Iranian authorities claim that the missiles used in these retaliatory strikes were merely “scrap missiles,” and they have warned that more advanced weaponry will soon be deployed. Brigadier General Jabari of the Revolutionary Guards stated, “Tehran has only fired scrap missiles so far. It will soon unveil unforeseen weapons,” according to Iranian media.
As the situation unfolds, the Indian government has expressed considerable concern. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) issued a statement emphasizing the need for restraint among all parties involved. “India is deeply concerned at the recent developments in Iran and the Gulf region. We urge all sides to exercise restraint, avoid escalation, and prioritize the safety of civilians,” the MEA said.
India has consistently maintained that dialogue and diplomacy are essential for de-escalation and stressed that the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all states must be respected.
Impact on Air Travel
The escalating conflict has led to significant disruptions in air travel. Air India and IndiGo have suspended flights to several Middle Eastern destinations due to widespread airspace closures resulting from the hostilities. IndiGo announced that all flights to and from the Middle East have been canceled until further notice. Additionally, SpiceJet has warned that some of its services may be affected due to the airspace closure in Dubai, which has temporarily shut down its airport.
The international community is watching closely as the situation continues to develop, with calls for diplomatic engagement becoming increasingly urgent. The implications of these strikes and subsequent retaliations may have long-lasting effects on regional stability.
