Iran Offers Compromises in Nuclear Talks Amid Munich Rally for Change
Iran has expressed a willingness to make significant compromises to revive its nuclear agreement with the United States, indicating possible cooperation in sectors such as energy, mining, and aviation. This diplomatic overture comes as a large rally in Munich supports calls for regime change in Tehran.
Tensions between Washington and Tehran have escalated, raising concerns about potential military conflict. In this context, Iranian officials have signalled a shift in tone, suggesting that they are ready to negotiate terms that would provide economic benefits to both nations.
Economic Interests Shape Negotiations
According to Hamid Ghanbari, Iran’s deputy director for economic diplomacy, any renewed agreement must ensure financial gains for the United States as well. “For the sake of an agreement’s durability, it is essential that the U.S. also benefits in areas with high and quick economic returns,” Ghanbari stated in an interview with Iran’s Fars news agency. He outlined that discussions could encompass collaboration in oil and gas exploration, shared energy fields, mining projects, and purchases of civilian aircraft.
Ghanbari emphasized that the collapse of the 2015 nuclear deal was partly due to its failure to secure American economic interests adequately. This shift suggests that Iran is now recognizing the importance of mutual benefits in any forthcoming agreement.
Diplomatic Talks Scheduled in Geneva
A U.S. delegation, including envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, is expected to meet with Iranian officials in Geneva on March 5, 2024. These talks will be mediated by Oman, reflecting increased efforts to lower tensions and explore a potential diplomatic breakthrough.
Iran’s deputy foreign minister, Majid Takht-Ravanchi, echoed sentiments of flexibility, stating, “The ball is in America’s court to prove that they want to do a deal.” He reiterated that while Iran is open to compromising on certain aspects of its nuclear programme, the lifting of U.S. sanctions remains a critical requirement for progress.
Massive Rally in Munich Calls for Regime Change
While diplomatic discussions unfold, opposition voices are gaining momentum abroad. In Munich, approximately 250,000 people gathered on March 2, 2024, to support exiled crown prince Reza Pahlavi’s call for regime change in Iran. Protesters, some waving green, white, and red flags featuring the lion and sun emblem from the pre-1979 Islamic Revolution, chanted slogans demanding change.
Pahlavi described the rally as part of a “global day of action,” appealing for international support for those protesting against economic hardships and political oppression in Iran. “We gather at an hour of profound peril to ask: Will the world stand with the people of Iran?” he urged. He warned that continued inaction could empower Tehran’s current leadership, stating, “The survival of Iran’s government sends a clear signal to every bully: kill enough people and you stay in power.”
The simultaneous developments underscore a complex scenario for Iran, where diplomatic initiatives are juxtaposed with mounting pressure from opposition movements advocating for political transformation. As negotiations advance, the response from both the U.S. and the Iranian regime will be pivotal in shaping the future of their relationship and the broader geopolitical landscape.
