The relationship between the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and the Samajwadi Party (SP) is becoming increasingly robust, according to SP chief Akhilesh Yadav. Speaking in Lucknow on February 15, 2024, Yadav announced that over 15,000 members from various political backgrounds have joined the SP during a significant event he referred to as a “PDA” (Prem Prasar Samaroh) in celebration of the upcoming festival of Holi.

Yadav described the event as a step towards fostering brotherhood and cooperation among citizens. He stated, “Peace and progress rest on the foundation of PDA. Social unity is the biggest achievement of positive and progressive politics,” emphasizing the importance of collaborative politics. The SP leader highlighted that this year’s gathering was designed to precede traditional Holi celebrations, aiming to create a sense of unity.

Among the notable political figures joining the SP were former minister Naseeruddin Siddiqui and former MLA Rajkumar Pal from Apna Dal (Soneylal). Siddiqui, who was once a prominent leader within the BSP and a close associate of Mayawati, had served four terms as a minister before his expulsion from the BSP in 2017. Yadav regarded their joining as a crucial development that would bolster the alliance’s prospects.

Reflecting on previous efforts for opposition unity, Yadav drew parallels to historical figures B.R. Ambedkar and Ram Manohar Lohia, who attempted to collaborate to reshape political dynamics. He lamented that past circumstances hindered their success but expressed hope that the current political climate would allow for a stronger alliance moving forward.

The SP and BSP had previously formed an alliance before the 2019 General Election in Uttar Pradesh, though it was short-lived, dissolving shortly after the elections concluded. This renewed commitment between the two parties suggests a strategic effort to consolidate power ahead of future elections.

In a pointed remark directed towards Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Yadav accused the government of disrespecting religious sentiments. “We stand with Shankaracharya ji,” he stated, alluding to a recent controversy involving the Shankaracharya title and the conduct of the district administration during the Magh Mela in Prayagraj. Adityanath had previously asserted that not everyone is entitled to the title of Shankaracharya, emphasizing the need for upholding religious decorum and the rule of law.

This alliance and the influx of new members signal a concerted effort by the SP and BSP to enhance their political influence in Uttar Pradesh. As the political landscape evolves, the implications of this partnership could be significant in shaping future electoral outcomes.
