India Expresses Condolences Following Khaleda Zia’s Passing
India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, expressed condolences on behalf of the Indian government following the death of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. Zia, who passed away on October 24, 2023, had a significant impact on the political landscape of Bangladesh, dominating it for over three decades.
During his visit to Dhaka, Jaishankar met with Tarique Rahman, the acting chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and Zia’s eldest son. Jaishankar conveyed India’s deepest sympathy and handed Rahman a personal letter from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Thousands attended Zia’s funeral, marking a moment of national mourning in Bangladesh.
Significance of Khaleda Zia’s Legacy
In a post on social media platform X, High Commissioner of Bangladesh to India, Riaz Hamidullah, shared details of Jaishankar’s visit. He noted that Jaishankar not only conveyed condolences but also recognized Zia’s contributions to democracy in Bangladesh. The Indian minister expressed optimism about strengthening bilateral ties as Bangladesh approaches its next elections scheduled for February 2026.
Jaishankar stated, “Handed over to him a personal letter from Prime Minister @narendramodi. Conveyed deepest condolences on behalf of the Government and people of India. Expressed confidence that Begum Khaleda Zia’s vision and values will guide the development of our partnership.”
Prime Minister Modi released a statement, reflecting on his meeting with Zia during his visit to Dhaka in 2015. He described her passing as “deeply saddening” and extended his condolences to her family and the people of Bangladesh. Modi remarked, “May the Almighty grant her family the fortitude to bear this tragic loss,” and emphasized that her vision and legacy would continue to influence the partnership between India and Bangladesh.
Current State of India-Bangladesh Relations
Jaishankar’s visit comes at a time when relations between India and Bangladesh are facing challenges. Tensions have surfaced following the establishment of an interim government led by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus. Concerns have been raised regarding the treatment of minorities, especially the Hindu community, in Bangladesh, which has led to strained ties between the two nations.
Despite these challenges, the emphasis on mutual respect and cooperation remains vital for both governments. As Bangladesh navigates its political landscape, India’s diplomatic gestures, such as the condolences expressed by Jaishankar, reflect a commitment to maintaining a constructive relationship.
