Delhi Woman Escapes Night of Terror in Uttarakhand Forest

A woman from Delhi faced a harrowing ordeal in Uttarakhand, spending an entire night hiding in a forest to escape an alleged rape attempt by her taxi driver. The incident occurred early on March 7, 2024, when the 31-year-old woman arrived in Kathgodam and hired a taxi for Nainital.

During the journey, around 01:30, the taxi driver deviated from the main route and took a deserted road in Patwa Dangar. When the woman objected to the diversion, the driver, identified as Deepak Singh Bora, reportedly stopped the vehicle, verbally assaulted her, and attempted to rape her. In a desperate bid for safety, she fled into the nearby woods and remained hidden until morning.

By dawn, the woman managed to reach Patwa Dangar village, where she sought help from locals. With their assistance, she filed a police report detailing the traumatic incident. Authorities responded swiftly, collecting evidence and arranging a medical examination for the victim, as mandated by law.

Police officials confirmed that a case was registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which addresses crimes such as rape, robbery, and abduction. Utilizing CCTV footage, the taxi’s registration number, and GPS data, investigators tracked down Bora, a 39-year-old resident of Haldwani. They recovered the victim’s stolen mobile phone from him, and his taxi was subsequently seized.

Nainital Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Manjunath TC emphasized the importance of tourist safety, asserting that rigorous legal measures will be enforced against anyone involved in such crimes. He also urged taxi owners to meticulously verify driver credentials and vehicle documentation, warning that failure to comply would result in strict repercussions. Notably, Bora was reportedly operating a taxi that was not his own.

This incident highlights the ongoing concerns regarding safety for travelers in popular tourist destinations in India. Local authorities are under pressure to ensure the protection of visitors and residents alike, particularly in areas frequented by tourists.
