Union Budget 2026: Focus on Tax Relief and Economic Growth
The Union Budget for 2026–27 is set to be unveiled on February 1, 2026, with a strong emphasis on tax relief, economic growth, and targeted support for specific sectors. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present the budget for the ninth consecutive time, addressing key economic challenges amid both global uncertainties and domestic demand management.
A significant aspect of the upcoming budget is the anticipated tax relief aimed at salaried taxpayers. Policy experts and industry representatives have advocated for an increase in the standard deduction, with suggestions reaching up to ₹1 lakh. Additionally, there are calls for the rationalisation of long-term capital gains tax and clarity on housing-related deductions to boost affordability in the real estate market.
Changes in Tax Legislation and Compliance
A major development is the planned implementation of a new Income Tax Act, effective April 1, 2026. This shift aims to streamline compliance, reduce litigation, and provide clear transition guidelines from the existing tax framework. Furthermore, additional concessions for senior citizens, particularly regarding medical expenses, are under consideration to enhance their financial security.
From a broader economic perspective, the government is likely to continue its strong emphasis on capital expenditure while pursuing fiscal consolidation and gradually decreasing the debt-to-GDP ratio. This approach aligns with ongoing initiatives aimed at strengthening infrastructure and manufacturing, particularly through the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes and the Make in India programme.
Prioritising Key Sectors for Support
In the upcoming budget, the government is expected to provide targeted policy support to several sectors, including technology, renewable energy, healthcare, and housing. These areas are seen as crucial for driving sustainable growth and meeting the needs of a rapidly evolving economy.
Overall, the Union Budget 2026–27 is anticipated to reflect a balanced approach, addressing immediate fiscal concerns while laying the groundwork for long-term economic stability. As stakeholders await more detailed announcements, the focus remains on how these proposed measures will impact consumers and businesses across the country.
