Thane Municipal Corporation Launches ₹7.69 Crore Stray Dog Initiative

The Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) has announced plans to construct a dedicated shelter and sterilization center for stray dogs beneath the Majiwada flyover. This initiative, which carries an estimated budget of ₹7.69 crore, aims to address the growing population of stray dogs in the city and follows directives from the Supreme Court and state authorities to improve animal birth control (ABC) infrastructure.

Project Relocation and Design

Initially intended for a site in Bhayandarpada, the project was moved due to land acquisition challenges. Under the leadership of Municipal Commissioner Saurabh Rao, the new facility will be situated behind the Majiwada Traffic Police Chowki. The center will feature a sterilization unit, an outpatient treatment area, and temporary shelters for stray dogs. Its design is inspired by successful animal welfare initiatives implemented in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.

According to TMC data, there are between 40,000 and 50,000 stray dogs within the corporation’s jurisdiction. Currently, about 50% of these dogs are sterilized, but the administration aims to increase this figure to 80–85% over the next three years. The focus on sterilization is seen as a crucial step in managing the stray population effectively.

Future Plans and Approval Process

The proposal for the new facility is scheduled for final approval at the General Body Meeting on March 18. While the center will offer essential medical care and help control the stray dog population, TMC officials emphasized the financial impracticality of housing every stray dog permanently. Instead, they view efficient sterilization as the key long-term solution to ensure urban safety and welfare.

As the project moves forward, it reflects a growing recognition of the need for comprehensive animal welfare strategies within urban environments, addressing both public safety and the humane treatment of stray animals.
