Over 140,000 Devotees Celebrate Ratha Saptami at Arasavalli Temple

On March 3, 2024, the Sri Suryanarayana Swamy Temple in Arasavalli, located in Srikakulam District, attracted an impressive turnout of approximately 140,000 devotees for the annual Ratha Saptami festival. The event, recognized as a State festival, gained particular significance this year as it fell on a Sunday, leading to an unprecedented influx of attendees.

The festivities began at midnight with the Ksheerabhishekam, a revered ritual involving the anointing of the deity with sacred milk. Prominent figures such as Union Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu and State Agriculture Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu presented silk garments to the deity on behalf of the government. The atmosphere was filled with spiritual fervor as Vedic scholars recited hymns, while chants of “Adityaya Namah” resonated throughout the temple town.

Efficient Arrangements and Crowd Management

District Collector Swapnil Dinakar Pundkar and Superintendent of Police K.V. Maheshwara Reddy oversaw the extensive arrangements for the event. Local MLA Gondu Shankar took an active role in crowd management, personally monitoring the situation and addressing the concerns of devotees. His proactive approach, including navigating queue lines on a two-wheeler, received commendations from attendees.

To enhance the experience, authorities established six separate queue lines to prioritize general devotees, allowing most visitors to complete their darshan within 30 minutes. By 16:00, around 140,000 devotees had successfully completed their visit to the temple. Organizers ensured the availability of essential services such as drinking water, cooling shelters, and medical camps. In addition, voluntary organizations distributed food and buttermilk, catering to the needs of the large crowd.

Cultural Festivities and Modern Attractions

The Ratha Saptami festival spans seven days and features a diverse range of cultural and recreational programs. Highlights include Surabhi dramas, helicopter and hot-air balloon rides, and a concert by renowned music director Thaman. Spectacular drone and laser shows, along with fireworks, added to the festive atmosphere. The inclusion of DWCRA bazaars provided a platform for local artisans and vendors, blending traditional elements with modern attractions.

Despite minor delays experienced in paid darshan queues, police maintained effective crowd regulation, ensuring a smooth flow of devotees throughout the day. The harmonious blend of spirituality, culture, and community spirit showcased during the Ratha Saptami festival reflects the rich heritage of the region and its significance to the devotees.
