Manipur Launches Pioneering Rigid Pavement Project to Improve Roads

In a significant initiative aimed at improving urban infrastructure, the government of Manipur has commenced the construction of a rigid pavement road system across the capital, Imphal. This project marks the first of its kind in India, addressing longstanding issues related to poor road conditions attributed to various environmental and infrastructural factors.

Chongtham Bishwachandra, Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD), announced the project during an interaction with media representatives on January 25, 2024. He highlighted the necessity of this undertaking, citing inadequate drainage systems, frequent waterlogging, flooding, and rising traffic congestion as primary motivators for implementing rigid pavement solutions.

Project Overview and Financial Aspects

The rigid pavement construction is part of the broader Manipur Urban Road, Drainage and Asset Management Improvement Project (MURDAMIP). The initiative has an estimated budget of Rs 3,647.23 crore, with a substantial portion of Rs 2,896.02 crore financed through a loan from the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

The project is designed to enhance connectivity, safety, and the overall resilience of urban and suburban roads, as well as the drainage networks in the greater Imphal area. In total, it encompasses a road length of 547.281 km for both improvement and new construction, alongside road asset management and a preliminary hydrology study of the Imphal Basin.

Current Progress and Future Goals

As of now, approximately 10 percent of the concrete road construction and around 4 percent of the drainage components have been completed. Furthermore, nearly 50 percent of the bituminous road works are also finished. These developments indicate a strong commitment to enhancing the infrastructure in Imphal and a proactive approach to tackling the region’s existing challenges.

The rigid pavement project is expected not only to alleviate current issues but also to contribute significantly to the long-term sustainability of the city’s transport and drainage systems. By embracing innovative construction techniques such as short panel concrete technology, Manipur aims to set a precedent for future urban development projects across the country.
