Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has initiated a statewide campaign to vaccinate over 9.84 lakh girls against human papillomavirus (HPV), a significant step in the fight against cervical cancer. The launch occurred on March 8, 2024, during a program organized by the Public Health Department at Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan in Mumbai, coinciding with International Women’s Day.

During the launch, Shinde highlighted the importance of women’s health, noting that many often neglect their well-being while balancing family and professional obligations. He emphasized that promoting women’s health is a collective responsibility and encouraged women to leverage government health initiatives.

The vaccination campaign specifically targets girls aged 14 who have not yet reached 15. The Maharashtra health department aims to complete the vaccination of 9,84,414 girls within the next three months. The event also recognized women who have excelled in various fields, with special acknowledgments given to female medical professionals and journalists.

Union Minister of State for AYUSH (Independent Charge) and Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav participated in the event virtually. Shinde remarked on the increasing incidence of diseases linked to changing lifestyles, underscoring that prevention is crucial. He stated that HPV vaccination is a proactive measure to combat cervical cancer and expressed confidence in the campaign’s potential to reduce the disease’s prevalence.

Addressing Women’s Health and Misinformation

Deputy Chairperson of the Maharashtra Legislative Council Neelam Gorhe addressed the historical disparities faced by women and stressed the necessity for societal change regarding women’s health. She pointed out the need for increased counseling services in both public and private sectors, as misinformation and lack of awareness about reproductive health still pose significant challenges.

State Public Health and Family Welfare Minister Prakash Abitkar reinforced the significance of the HPV vaccination initiative, describing it as a critical strategy for preventing cervical cancer. He noted that the campaign will run across Maharashtra for three months, after which the vaccine will be incorporated into the regular immunization program. Abitkar also cautioned against the spread of misinformation about the HPV vaccine on social media, urging journalists and the public to share accurate information. He highlighted that 160 countries have already implemented HPV vaccination programs, making India the 161st country to do so.

Government Support and Future Implications

Minister of State Meghna Sakore-Bordikar reiterated that both the central and state governments are committed to advancing women’s health initiatives. She emphasized that early diagnosis and vaccination are pivotal in preventing cervical cancer and noted that widespread immunization could substantially alleviate the disease burden in Maharashtra.

The event saw participation from various officials, including Sanjay Ghadhi, Deputy Mayor of Mumbai, and several senior health department officials. The collaborative efforts showcased during this campaign reflect a broader commitment to improving health outcomes for women in Maharashtra, marking a proactive approach to addressing a critical health issue.
