Venus Williams Falls to Tatjana Maria in Hobart Opener
Venus Williams faced an early exit at the Hobart International, losing 6-4, 6-3 to Tatjana Maria in the first round on January 9, 2024. This match serves as Williams’ final preparation before she competes in the Australian Open, which begins on January 14. The 45-year-old Williams, who received a wild-card entry for both tournaments, struggled against the sixth-seeded Maria in a contest that lasted nearly 90 minutes.
Despite breaking Maria’s serve in the first set, Williams was unable to maintain her momentum. She dropped her serve twice, allowing Maria, currently ranked 42nd by the WTA, to secure the set and ultimately the match. This marks a disappointing continuation for Williams, who also lost in the first round at the previous tournament in Auckland, New Zealand.
The combined ages of 83 years for both players set a record for the oldest singles match in WTA history. Reflecting on her performance, Williams expressed her frustration with the conditions, stating, “I felt bad I wasn’t able to give that performance I usually give. I was in control until I wasn’t.” She acknowledged the challenges of competing after a lengthy hiatus, emphasizing the need to continue working hard.
Maria, who has balanced her professional career with motherhood, shared her hope that their match could inspire younger players. “For all the little girls out there… they have time and can improve and play [for] longer,” she remarked. “I’m a professional tennis player but I’m also a mom and we have a normal life.”
Williams has a storied history at the Australian Open, reaching the singles final in 2003 and 2017 but losing to her sister, Serena Williams, on both occasions. As she prepares to return to Melbourne Park for the first time in five years, she will surpass the age record held by Kimiko Date, who was 44 during her appearance at the 2015 Australian Open.
In another notable first-round match at Hobart, two-time Grand Slam champion Barbora Krejčíková was defeated by American Peyton Stearns in a closely contested match that ended with a score of 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (4). As the tournament progresses, Williams will be looking to regain her form and make a significant impact at the upcoming Grand Slam event.
