Unnati, Tanvi, and Aakarshi Dominate at National Badminton Championships

The 87th Senior National Badminton Championships in Vijayawada saw impressive performances from several top players on March 6, 2024. Among those advancing to the next round were women’s top seed Unnati Hooda, world junior championships silver medallist Tanvi Sharma, and seasoned competitor Aakarshi Kashyap. Their victories underscore the growing talent in Indian badminton as they aim for national glory.

Unnati Hooda began her campaign after receiving a bye in the first round. She faced wildcard entrant Akanksha Matte and secured a convincing victory with scores of 21-8 and 21-18. Tanvi Sharma also showcased her skills by defeating Shaina Manimuthu, the Asian U-15 girls singles gold medallist, with a solid performance ending in 21-10 and 21-14.

Aakarshi Kashyap added to the excitement by defeating Lakshya Rajesh, who is the silver medallist from the Asian U-17 championships, with a dominant scoreline of 21-7 and 21-9. Another player making headlines was Ashmita Chaliha, who triumphed over Kavya Marvaniya with a score of 21-7 and 21-11.

Upsets and Advancements in Men’s Singles

The men’s singles event also showcased remarkable talent. Rounak Chauhan, the 11th seed, advanced by defeating Ranveer Singh with a score of 21-9 and 21-13. Additionally, 12th seed D S Saneeth secured his place in the next round by overcoming Ankit Mondal with scores of 21-7 and 21-11.

In a surprising twist, 16th seed Purva Barve became the only seeded player to exit the tournament early. She lost a closely contested match against M Meghana Reddy, with final scores of 21-19, 17-21, and 18-21.
