Riyad Mahrez Shatters Records as Algeria’s AFCON Top Scorer
Algerian forward Riyad Mahrez made history on March 15, 2024, by becoming his country’s all-time top scorer at the African Cup of Nations (AFCON). In a commanding performance, Mahrez scored twice in Algeria’s 3-0 victory over Sudan during their opening match of Group E at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat. His impressive tally at AFCON now stands at eight goals, surpassing previous records set by Algerian players.
Mahrez set the tone for the match by scoring just 82 seconds after the kickoff. The quick goal came after a deft back-heel pass from Hicham Boudaoui following a cross from Mohamed Amoura. The early strike sent the majority of the 16,115-strong crowd into a frenzy, showcasing the enthusiasm of Algerian fans present for the encounter.
The former Manchester City winger, now playing for Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia, further extended Algeria’s lead at the 61-minute mark. Mahrez capitalized on a beautifully placed assist from Amoura, executing a precise finish that left the Sudanese defense scrambling. As the match progressed, Sudan’s chances dwindled, particularly after Salaheldin Adil received a red card for a second yellow just before halftime.
Despite having a goal disallowed for offside shortly after, Algeria maintained their dominance. Late in the match, substitute Ramy Bensebaini found the net, bringing the score to 3-0 and marking Algeria’s 100th goal in AFCON history. This win is particularly significant for Algeria, which faced early exits in the previous two tournaments without securing a single victory.
Among the notable attendees was French football legend Zinedine Zidane, whose father is Algerian. His son, Luca Zidane, started as goalkeeper for the Algerian side, drawing cheers from the crowd when featured on the big screen.
Algeria’s strong start in this tournament stands in stark contrast to their recent AFCON history, where they struggled to make an impact. The team’s resounding win against Sudan signals a promising beginning as they aim to reclaim their stature on the continental stage.
As the tournament progresses, Mahrez’s record-breaking performance will undoubtedly continue to inspire his teammates and fans alike, reaffirming his status as one of Algeria’s football greats.
