Italy’s Crishan Kalugamage Shines with 3 Wickets Against Nepal
Crishan Kalugamage, an Italian spinner originally from Sri Lanka, took centre stage during the T20 World Cup on Thursday, claiming three wickets for just 18 runs against Nepal. His performance included dismissals of key players such as captain Rohit Paudel, seasoned batter Dipendra Singh Airee, and Gulsan Jha. Kalugamage’s impressive bowling helped to disrupt Nepal’s batting unit, showcasing his growing talent on the international cricket scene.
From Pizza Maker to Bowling Star
Crishan Kalugamage relocated to Italy with his family nearly twenty years ago. Now based in Lucca, a picturesque city in the Tuscany region, he balances his job at a local pizzeria with his passion for cricket. Kalugamage often jokes about the parallels between pizza-making and bowling, stating, “It’s all about the fingertips.”
As a right-arm leg-spinner, he plays for the historic Roma Cricket Club, one of Italy’s oldest cricket clubs. However, managing both work and sport presents challenges. Sundays, typically among the busiest days for restaurants, coincide with many cricket matches, complicating his efforts to maintain consistent employment.
“I lost a lot of jobs,” Kalugamage explained in an interview with BBC Sport. “Many bosses don’t like it when you miss work to play cricket.” Despite these obstacles, he remains committed to improving his skills. He is currently learning under the guidance of John Davison, a coach acclaimed by Australian cricketer Nathan Lyon as “the best spin coach in the world.”
Future Aspirations in Cricket
While Kalugamage’s immediate focus remains on his restaurant job, he harbours dreams of pursuing cricket as a full-time career. “Now, my main job is in the restaurant. After the World Cup, we’ll see if I have a chance to play somewhere. Hopefully, in the future, it’s only cricket,” he stated in an interview with ESPNcricinfo.
In this T20 World Cup, Kalugamage’s performance has been impactful. Although he went wicketless in Italy’s opening match against Scotland, he rebounded strongly against Nepal. Across his T20 International career, he has taken 20 wickets in 19 matches, maintaining an impressive economy rate of 6.60. His overall statistics also reflect his capabilities, with 22 wickets in 13 List A matches, highlighting his potential as a significant player in the sport.
As Crishan Kalugamage continues his dual journey as a pizza-maker and a budding cricket star, his story serves as an inspiration for aspiring athletes balancing work and passion. With his remarkable talent and determination, the cricketing world may soon see more of this emerging star.
