Uttar Pradesh Youth Amputates Foot to Secure Medical College Spot

A young man from Uttar Pradesh undertook a drastic measure to secure a place in medical college by amputating his foot to qualify for the disability quota. Suraj Bhaskar, approximately 20 years old, resorted to this extreme action after failing the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) twice. He falsely claimed to have lost his foot in a violent attack, prompting an investigation by local authorities.

The incident occurred in Khalilpur village, Jaunpur district. Suraj’s elder brother, Akash Bhaskar, reported to police on January 18, 2026, that “unidentified assailants” had attacked Suraj, leaving him unconscious with a severed foot. This claim initiated a case and led to an investigation, which was subsequently overseen by City Circle Officer Goldy Gupta.

As the investigation unfolded, police uncovered inconsistencies in Suraj’s statements. A thorough examination of his mobile phone and inquiries involving a woman connected to the case raised further doubts about his narrative. Additionally, authorities discovered a diary belonging to Suraj in which he had written, “I will become an MBBS doctor in 2026,” indicating a premeditated desire to pursue a medical career.

According to police reports, Suraj, having faced mental stress due to his failure in the NEET exams, allegedly planned to fabricate a story that would enable him to gain admission under the disability quota. “The accused attempted to mislead the investigation with a fabricated story, but his claims did not withstand scrutiny during sustained questioning and examination of evidence,” police stated.

The case was shared with Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Ayush Srivastava on January 21, 2026. Authorities are now seeking legal advice to determine appropriate criminal charges against Suraj for his actions. Police have emphasized that legal action is underway, and the investigation continues to be a priority.

Currently, Suraj Bhaskar is receiving treatment at a private hospital.
