ARAI Launches Hydrogen Engine Development Facility in India

The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) has announced plans to develop a hydrogen-powered internal combustion (IC) engine facility in India. During a press conference at the recent Symposium on International Automotive Technology (SIAT 2026), which will take place from January 27-30, 2026, Dr. Reji Mathai, Director of ARAI, outlined this strategic initiative aimed at advancing automotive technologies in the country.

Dr. Mathai emphasized the importance of innovation within the automotive sector, particularly as road safety remains a pressing concern. He stated that the number of road accidents in India has escalated significantly, highlighting the need for advanced safety technologies. “ARAI is focusing on researching and providing effective solutions for making newly launched vehicles safer with necessary technology,” Dr. Mathai remarked.

In addition to its safety initiatives, ARAI is actively supporting startups launched by the central government. This initiative is designed to foster entrepreneurship and equip new businesses with essential technological resources. Over the past three to four years, ARAI has registered 18 patents and is conducting research on Intelligent Vehicle Technology to enhance traffic-related data collection across India.

An integral part of ARAI’s mission includes addressing air pollution resulting from fuel consumption. Dr. Mathai noted, “We are also studying the problems caused by air pollution from fuel and researching effective solutions.” This research aligns with ARAI’s broader commitment to not only enhance vehicle safety but also advance environmental sustainability within the automotive industry.

New Facilities and Initiatives

To further its objectives, ARAI plans to establish a photometric laboratory. This facility will be instrumental in testing automotive spare parts manufactured in India, as well as assessing indoor and outdoor lighting standards. The laboratory’s establishment reflects ARAI’s dedication to improving the quality and safety of automotive components.

Additionally, under the MARG 2.0 initiative, ARAI is collecting data on road unevenness through advanced sensors and analytics. This program utilizes the International Roughness Index (IRI) and ISO 8608 standards via a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based platform that connects roughness data with geo-referenced road images. This innovative approach aims to enhance road quality and safety for all users.

As the automotive landscape evolves, ARAI’s initiatives signal a commitment to embracing new technologies while prioritizing safety and environmental health. With the establishment of the hydrogen engine facility and continuing research efforts, ARAI is poised to play a significant role in shaping the future of the automotive industry in India.
