Suryakumar Yadav Shines with Back-to-Back Fifties Against New Zealand
India’s captain, Suryakumar Yadav, showcased a remarkable resurgence in form during the third T20 match against New Zealand on January 25, 2026, in Guwahati. After completing a chase of 154 runs, Yadav’s impressive 57 runs off just 26 balls highlighted his return to form, following a stellar 82 runs from 37 balls in the previous match held in Raipur. With two fifties in consecutive games, he has silenced critics who questioned his recent performances.
Following the match, New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell approached Yadav, examining his bat with a smile, a gesture reflecting the admiration for a player who, when in form, can dominate the field. For the Indian team management, Yadav’s revival is a reassuring sign with the T20 World Cup just weeks away. Until January 23, his situation was less favorable; he had gone through a challenging spell, enduring 23 innings without a fifty since October 12, 2024.
During that period, he recorded only one score exceeding 40 runs and one above 30. Alarmingly, he was dismissed by fast bowlers 15 times within the first ten balls of his innings, raising concerns about his form. The second T20I in Raipur marked a pivotal moment for Yadav. The early departure of key players, Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson, forced him into a more patient role. With his team in a precarious position at 1.1 overs, he took a measured approach, scoring just 10 runs from his first ten balls. This unusual strike rate allowed him to assess the pitch and adapt to the bowlers.
Once settled, Yadav exploded with a remarkable 72 runs off his next 27 balls, notably targeting the fast bowlers who had troubled him in recent months. Notably, he hit Zak Foulkes for 41 runs off 12 balls, while Matt Henry and Jacob Duffy also felt the brunt of his onslaught. This innings marked the return of Yadav’s renowned 360-degree stroke play, a hallmark of his batting style.
Former Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar emphasized the significance of this innings during the broadcast, stating, “The knock gave him exactly the confidence he needed. He hasn’t been short of form; he’s been short of runs. He has been batting very well in the nets.” Gavaskar underlined that sometimes, all it takes is a bit of fortune to get going, adding that Yadav’s innings was precisely what he needed to regain his confidence.
The effect of this renewed confidence was evident in the third T20I at the Baraspara Stadium. Yadav entered the match under different conditions, with India at 53 for two in just 3.2 overs while chasing 154. With ample overs remaining, he approached the innings with caution, scoring only eight runs from his first eight balls while Sharma continued to score at a rapid pace. Yadav’s decision to focus on his match-ups proved wise, as he targeted the spinners effectively.
In this innings, he dominated Glenn Phillips, scoring 15 runs off five balls, while Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner also faced the brunt of his power hitting. Many of his runs came through well-executed sweeps and slog-sweeps, reinforcing his ability to anchor the innings if the openers falter.
Former India opener Aakash Chopra echoed similar sentiments during a discussion, noting, “He seemed to have realised that he needs to spend some time in the middle. You have to accept that you need runs.” Chopra praised Yadav for not succumbing to ego, especially while batting alongside Ishan Kishan, who was scoring freely. This strategic approach is particularly crucial as the team prepares for the upcoming World Cup.
As Yadav continues to find his rhythm, the Indian cricket team looks to build on this momentum ahead of the T20 World Cup, with a captain in form providing a significant advantage. The coming weeks will be crucial for Yadav and the team as they ready themselves for the challenges that lie ahead on the international stage.
