NAAC Report Calls for Enhanced Research Opportunities at Goa University
The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has recommended significant improvements for Goa University (GU) following its achievement of an A+ grade in July 2023. This recognition marks the first time the university has attained such a high rating, reflecting its commitment to educational excellence. The recommendations, made public last month, aim to enhance the university’s offerings and research capabilities.
Among the key suggestions from the NAAC report is the introduction of new courses in logistics management, supply chain management, and entrepreneurship. The peer review team also encouraged the university to explore programs focused on artificial intelligence, machine learning, and digital marketing. Additionally, the establishment of a translation centre was recommended, leveraging GU’s strong faculty expertise in language studies.
The report emphasizes the need for GU to promote its laboratories and experimental facilities to benefit local and national researchers. This initiative could foster collaboration and expand the university’s research footprint beyond its current student base. The NAAC team pointed out that increasing the presence of national and international students on campus is essential for diversifying the academic environment.
Goa University boasts a sprawling campus of over 400 acres, with a student body comprising 69.5% female students. Many of these students come from rural backgrounds and are first-generation learners, which the report identifies as significant strengths. The university has made strides in providing research incentives to faculty members and has established a solid infrastructure for studies in both Indian and foreign languages.
There are, however, challenges that the university must address. The NAAC team noted concerns regarding the university’s lower enrollment numbers, attributed to the local population size, as well as a limited selection of undergraduate programs. The absence of certain disciplines, such as geography and physical education, also poses a barrier to attracting a broader student demographic.
The report highlighted external challenges, including a road that bisects the campus and limited opportunities for generating revenue through industrial partnerships. Additionally, there is a perception of Goa that may not align with serious scientific inquiry, which could hinder the university’s growth.
The A+ grade represents a substantial improvement from the B++ rating received in the previous assessment cycle in 2022. GU achieved a cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.30 in the latest evaluation, a noteworthy increase from the 2.86 recorded during the last assessment.
The NAAC noted that GU has made considerable efforts to implement recommendations from prior assessments. The university has engaged in community outreach by adopting five villages and ensuring that all programs align with the National Education Policy (NEP). Furthermore, the report commended the campus for its security measures, accessibility features, and effective waste management systems.
The assessment process evaluated various aspects of the university, including curriculum quality, teaching methods, research initiatives, and institutional governance. The recommendations present an opportunity for Goa University to strengthen its position in the academic landscape, enhancing its appeal to both local and international scholars.
