IIT Madras Launches Cancer Genome Database for Targeted Research
The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has launched the Bharat Cancer Genome Atlas (BCGA), a comprehensive genome database aimed at advancing research on paediatric leukaemia, colorectal, and pancreatic cancers. This database is now publicly accessible to researchers and clinicians both in India and internationally at the website bcga.iitm.ac.in.
According to a report from the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), one in nine Indians is expected to develop cancer, with approximately 2.5 million individuals currently living with the disease. The incidence of cancer in India has been increasing by an alarming rate of 12.8% annually since 2022. Despite these statistics, Indian patients are significantly under-represented in global cancer genome studies, which has prompted IIT Madras to take action.
To address this gap, IIT Madras initiated the Indian Cancer Genome Programme in March 2020. This program successfully completed whole genome sequencing of patient samples collected from across the nation, with substantial support from the Hyundai Motor India’s Hyundai Hope for Cancer initiative, which contributed ₹56 crore in funding. An additional ₹3 crore was allocated to assist in treatment for economically disadvantaged families.
Collaborative Efforts and New Platforms
The research is spearheaded by the Centre of Excellence on Cancer Genomics and Molecular Therapeutics at IIT Madras. The project involved collaborations with Karkinos Healthcare based in Mumbai and several hospitals in Chennai. Alongside the BCGA, IIT Madras also launched the Bharat Cancer Genome Grid (BCG2), a clinician-centric platform designed to integrate genomic data into everyday oncology practice.
This initiative has received backing from the Department of Science and Technology and the National Center for Precision Medicine in Cancer. It further encompasses various outreach programs, including screening camps, technician training, and mobile healthcare services, all aimed at improving cancer care in India.
The launch of BCGA represents a significant step forward in addressing the unique challenges faced by cancer patients in India. By making this valuable genomic data freely available, IIT Madras is not only enhancing the potential for localized research but also fostering collaboration among healthcare professionals and researchers to better understand and treat cancer within the Indian population.
