Dr. Muppidi Rambabu Secures Two New Patents, Totaling 26
Dr. Muppidi Rambabu, a faculty member at the Footwear Design & Development Institute (FDDI) in Hyderabad, has achieved a significant milestone by securing two new design patents, bringing his total to 26. The new patents, published in the Indian Patent Office Journal on February 13, cover designs for a ‘Utility Basket’ and a children’s ‘Toy Robo.’
The design for the Utility Basket was inspired by traditional basket-making techniques observed in local areas such as Nampally, Filmnagar, and Afzalgunj. Dr. Rambabu engaged with artisans, studying existing forms and practices before transforming these concepts into a modern product. His creative process included manual sketching and computer-aided design (CAD) modeling, leading to a contemporary interpretation of a traditional craft. The patent application also lists collaborators, including Abdul Swabeer M. and Dr. Murali V. Kesaboina.
The Toy Robo, Dr. Rambabu’s second patent, has a personal significance. He designed it in response to a request from his daughter, Ananya, who wished for a toy of her own. To create the Toy Robo, Dr. Rambabu spent time observing children at play in parks across Hyderabad and Raidurgam. Utilizing traditional Etikoppaka craft techniques, he developed a lightweight wooden prototype, which he painted in natural colors. The design was digitally refined before being officially filed in December 2025.
Background and Impact
Growing up in a family of bamboo artisans, Dr. Rambabu has a deep-rooted connection to craft. He has often spoken about his parents’ commitment to providing their children with education to ensure they did not experience the hardships that his family once faced. This background influences his work, which aims to support artisans by making design knowledge accessible and creating products that resonate in contemporary markets.
According to records from the Indian Patent Office, Dr. Rambabu has filed a total of 44 design patent applications, with 26 successfully granted. His accomplishments reflect a dedication not only to innovation but also to the preservation and promotion of traditional crafts within modern contexts.
Dr. Rambabu’s patents contribute to a broader narrative of integrating heritage with contemporary design, reinforcing the importance of cultural craftsmanship in today’s economy. His work serves as a bridge between traditional artisanship and modern market demands, showcasing how innovation can thrive alongside cultural heritage.
