Shia Muslims in Kashmir Protest After Khamenei’s Killing
Shia Muslims in Jammu and Kashmir have organized peaceful demonstrations in Budgam and Srinagar to protest the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, by the United States and Israel. The protests, which took place on March 16, 2024, involved participants raising slogans against both countries while expressing solidarity with Iran.
In Budgam, demonstrators gathered to voice their outrage, while a larger protest unfolded in Srinagar, where hundreds of Shia Muslims participated. Protesters displayed images of Khamenei and carried banners showing support for Iran. Some participants marked the occasion by chanting traditional mourning verses, known as Nauha, as well as displaying black flags and portraits of the Ayatollah.
A participant in the Srinagar protest commented to ANI, “Today, our beloved leader, Ali Khamenei, was brutally martyred. Yes, this mourning procession is going on peacefully in the city centre.” The atmosphere remained calm throughout the demonstrations, emphasizing the peaceful intent of the gatherings.
Iran Observes National Mourning
Iran is currently observing a 40-day mourning period following Khamenei’s death, as reported by Iranian state media. This period holds significant spiritual importance in Shia Islam, particularly on the 40th day after a death, known as Arba’een. Khamenei’s death occurred following military strikes carried out by the US and Israel during an operation referred to as Operation Epic Fury/Lion’s Roar.
The Iranian Supreme Leader’s office has announced a nationwide period of mourning, with flags flown at half-mast and public gatherings scheduled to honor Khamenei’s legacy. As the country reflects on his nearly 37 years of leadership, the focus shifts to the future of Iran’s political landscape. Khamenei succeeded Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic, in 1989, and during his tenure, he was known for his staunch opposition to Western influence.
Security Measures in Iran Heightened
In response to the protests and potential unrest, Iranian authorities have increased security measures across the nation, especially in major cities like Tehran. The government is taking precautions to maintain public safety during this tumultuous period. With Khamenei’s passing, attention is also turning to the succession process, as speculation surrounds potential candidates to fill the leadership role and the implications for Iran’s future.
The protests in Kashmir reflect a wider sentiment among Shia Muslims regarding the geopolitical tensions involving Iran, the US, and Israel. As the mourning continues and the political landscape evolves, both local and international observers are closely monitoring developments in the region.
